Are you f’in kidding?

April 1, 2010 Blog No Comments

So I was in class today, talking about movies and promotion and we got into an area where I mentioned San Diego Comic Con.

“What is Comic Con?” a blissfully ungeeky young woman asked.

I spent some time trying to describe it and had this old man realization – oh yeah, I could just go to Youtube and show her a clip.

That’s what I did and searched San Diego Comic Con crowd because I wanted to show her the throng and mass of people there. The first clip I tried was kind of crappy and not very good.

“Hang on,” I said. “I should get something from 2009, because I was there that year.”

I amended my search, tagging 2009 on the end, and really hoping for a shot of the mass of young women lined up days in advance for the Twilight New Moon event in Hall H.

The first video that came up had a good description – “San Diego Comic Con Exhibit Hall Crowd” so I chose it.

We watched a pretty jerky clip of the action on the floor, that was chaotic enough to show that crush of people.

“Wouldn’t it be funny,” I said, “if there was a shot of me in this?”

And then there was.

I know!

At 15 seconds in I walk into the center of the frame and out the other side.

I don’t even know what to say about this. All the Youtube vids in the world, all of the things I could have searched, all of the people in that thousands in that huge crowd, all of the odds to shoot anything anywhere, and I pick this one. With me in it, two seconds after I say that.

Where’s my lottery ticket?

Cousin Curt’s Corner

Greetings from thelabcoatguy.

I just wanted to tell you about an exciting new feature here at FauxPop – Cousin Curt’s Corner.

Cousin Curt is a young man of only 20 years, a film student, a serious drinker of water, and a man who has accompanied us on a few of our adventures. He is also a bit of a bookend for me. oddly enough.

Where my dad is the oldest brother in his family, and I am the oldest grandchild, Cousin Curt’s dad is the youngest brother in that same family, and Curt is the youngest grandchild. And whereas, I am the handsomest, smartest and most delightfully entertaining grandchild,  Curt is, once again, the youngest grandchild.

Thus, it gives us all great pleasure to have Cousin Curt drop in at the FauxPop labs and give us a few of his best words, with hardly any editing.

Countdown to Entry

Lined up to get in

If I admit that I had lunch at Fuddruckers, would you think less of me?

I know I do.

But I was faced with a series of unknowns: how much time would we spend having lunch? How could we eat food that would be healthy enough that we wouldn’t die once the carbo load of the Con itself was underway? How can I get Cousin Curt and Cub Reporter Isaac into a restaurant if they don’t see a menu up on the wall with hamburgers listed?

Plus, those fiendish bastards at Fuddruckers were handing out ad copy. Note to self – advertising works.

After a salad the size of my head we wandered back down 5th Street to check out the lines, and see if we could get our press passes.
We could, assuming we were willing to jump to the back of the… I am going to stop using the “L” word. No more whining about that. How many years did I wish I could make it here, and now that I am, am I going to cry about the queuing of the masses? No more.

San Diego Comic Con 2009 Report
Wednesday, July 22 – Day 1

I don’t want to write the same thing every other first time attendee starts off with, but my God, the line-ups!

We left L.A. early, rolling off Santa Monica Blvd around six, and thinking we would be the only ones on the road. Just like everybody else thought.

Two hours later we were ringing the edge of San Diego, funneling in with every other commuter.

We lined up to get off the freeway.
Lined up to go south along Harbor Drive.
Lined up to get into the parking lot.
