A Guy Learning How To Draw: EP10

AGuyLearningHowToDraw_smallFollowing up on episode 9 this is a continuation of the same piece in the inking stages. I talk a little bit about what I was focusing on in this image, as well as what I learned and where I think I need to improve.

Hopin’ Mic with J. Scott Cowan: Not Your Mascot (video)

Not Your Mascot

Professional sports logos can be political (Patriots, Canadiens), goofy (Mighty Ducks, Pelicans), or even reminiscent of our violent history (Raiders, Titans). Regardless of the mascot, sports fans line up to cheer for and against these teams; even, for whatever reason, spending millions trying to dress like them. There are, however, some team mascots and logos that, intentionally or not, trivialize, stereotype and outright mock some minority groups. In this episode of Hopin’ Mic, liberal-virtue-signaller J. Scott Cowan take a quick trip through pro-sports history – and Inuit history – giving us his thoughts on the issue and inviting you to tune in and see if you agree…

Hopin’ Mic with J. Scott Cowan: Pot and the Law (video)

Pot and the Law

Contrary to popular belief, possession of marijuana – in any amount – remains illegal in Canada and is still being prosecuted in our courts in spite of all appearances to the contrary. So how can Justin Trudeau shrug and admit, “ yeah, I’ve had couple of puffs” – even while he was serving as an MP? How do you explain to a citizen that they deserve a criminal record, while their head of state flaunts his erstwhile “criminal” behaviour on a comedy show? Join J. Scott Cowan as he explains how and why this obviously unjust situation can and should be addressed.

A Guy Learning How To Draw: EP09

AGuyLearningHowToDraw_smallIn this episode I am experimenting with a new format for the show that I might drop in from time to time while working on longer pieces like this. I follow up on my last episode where I started this latest “Pin-Up” piece and show the pencil process entirely in time-laps with commentary.

A Guy Learning How To Draw: EP08

AGuyLearningHowToDraw_smallApologies for the lower quality audio, there were some technical difficulties. In this episode I get started on an all new piece in what I would call the “pin-up” category, even though it’s not a “pin-up” in the traditional sense. I look at pieces like this that I have done in the past and talk about all of the notes and lessons I am trying to incorporate into this one new piece. The main focus being composition we also crack the secret behind the mysterious guide lines seen in some of Mark Schultz’s process art in his art books.

Current Sessions EP10: Mattie Leon

Current Sessions-iTunesShot in Toronto’s Beaches neighbourhood, this live video of Mattie Leon playing “Until Your Love Runs Out” was captured by Current Sessions in November. With the cold, autumn rain as a backdrop, Mattie sat down and performed the tune in one take on an upright piano. The song, taken from his 2015 EP ‘Terrace’, is about watching an eroding love come to its final moments and refusing to be the one who pulls the plug.
